Reliving the 1996 Olympics at the Atlanta History Center

I recently wrote about how I occasionally get free admission to museums.  In an effort to practice what I preach, I took advantage of a free museum day and visited the Atlanta History Center.  It was really neat to learn more about my new city; I especially loved the exhibit about the 1996 Summer Olympics that were held in Atlanta.

I rarely visit museums that focus solely on the history of a specific place, so it was really interesting to learn about Atlanta’s history.  For example, I never knew that Atlanta was founded simply because it was the end of a railway line.  In fact, the town was called “Terminus” for years before being named Atlanta.  I also didn’t realize that Coca-Cola was founded here.  The company still has its headquarters in Atlanta.  (If you ever need to satiate a sweet tooth, I recommend you visit the World of Coca-Cola, where you can try unlimited samples of Coke’s global soda flavors.) My husband and I have been trying out lots of new hobbies lately.  One lesson we’ve learned the hard way is that it’s important to find a hobby that fits in the space you have.  For example, we live in a 900 square foot apartment, which will soon be home to both of us and a baby.  We don’t have space for a wood-working shop.  Or an exercise area.  We need hobbies for small spaces.

Here are the hobbies that have fit well into our cramped space and our limited budget. Read more »

How I Got Duped By Voodoo Doughnut

My undying love for food has been thoroughly documented on this blog.  Heck, I even have a blog tag called “fast food,” which shows just how deep my food love is (or how low my standards are).   This is why I’m sure none of you will be surprised to hear that I cried a little when I heard my husband had visited the notorious Voodoo Doughnut store in Portland, Oregon without me.  (I was taking a pregnant lady nap, and felt doubly wounded that he a.  ate donuts without me, while b. I was recovering from the strain of carrying his child. )

Anyway, I got over it when he suggested that we go back to Voodoo Doughnut.  Read more »
