In Search of Hippos at Lake Naivasha, Kenya

When we went to Aberdares National Park and saw animals like elephants, warthogs, and the elusive giant forest hog, I realized that not all Kenyan safaris would involve arid plains.

So last weekend, when we ended up on a 40-minute boat “safari” around Lake Naivasha, I shouldn’t have been surprised to see exotic wildlife.  But growing up near several lakes in Maine, I was surprised.  Lake Naivasha was not the kind of lake I was used to.  Or maybe I just take the local flora and fauna for granted in Maine.  Anyway, for me the highlight was seeing HIPPOS– which I have never seen in the wild.

Wildlife photos from our trip:

a yellow-billed stork

a fish eagle with fish in its talons

Check out the chompers on this hippo!

What animal would you love to see in the wild?
