What Groupons Can Tell You About a New Place

By: JacindaWalker

(If you aren’t familiar with Groupon, it’s a company that offers deeply discounted local deals on things ranging from restaurants to white water rafting.  Group + coupon = Groupon)

Here’s what I’ve learned about places, based on the local groupons:

Providence, RI- people love good food – When we lived in Providence, most of the groupons were for restaurants.  And unlike in Atlanta, they were all really good restaurants.  Like restaurants you would go to even if you didn’t have a groupon.

Atlanta, GA – people are obsessed with physical appearance – A solid half of the Atlanta groupons are for things like teeth whitening, liposuction, Invisalign braces, tanning and, my personal favorite, colon hydrotherapy.  Do you really want to buy a discounted colon cleanse?

Denver, CO – people love to exercise – There are groupons for horseback riding, and for discounted entry into road races and for gym memberships.  Denver does still have it’s fair share of Zerona slimming treatments and tanning deals though.  You can exercise here, but you better look good doing it.

Portland, ME – people are hipsters – When we lived in Portland, Groupon hadn’t reached Maine yet.  So instead, people used coupons from The Portland Pheonix online auction.  The coupons were for places like the boutique erotica store, the dive bar near the pier, and the funky independent t-shirt store.

What do your local Groupons reveal about your town?

Yes, what do the Groupon deals reveal about my town?

Our closest big town is Bendigo, this is where we both work at the moment and is about a half hour country drive from us. When I entered Bendigo as my location in Groupon, it offered me a deal to do a winery tour in the Yarra Valley.

The Yarra Valley is a great wine region but it’s a two and a half hour drive to get there – that’s before you start touring around for the day (and of course, it’s another 2.5 hours to get back home at the end of the wine-tasting day!)

But the most interesting thing is that we actually live just out of the township of Heathcote – a well-renowned wine region! :)
